Makeover Your Jars for the SummerBy this time of the year I have eaten most of the veggies and jams that I canned at the end of last summer and now find myself with numerous empty canning jars. Jumping on the seasonal trend of summer fruits and ice cream, I set out to Dollar Tree for ideas for my empty canning jars and came up with three ideas that I’m really excited to share with you!

1. Ice Cream Float Straw HolderMakeover Your Jars for the Summer

One of my favorite summer desserts is an ice cream float. They’re so easy to make and are a great end to a hot summer day. This summer I’m storing our ice cream float straws in a fun, decorative ice cream themed jar.

Sweet Supplies:

  • Acrylic Paint in Pastel Colors (I used pink and purple)
  • Paint Brushes
  • Rainbow Nonpareil Sprinkles or Colored Seed Beads
  • Tacky Glue®
  • Novelty Stickers
  • Paper Straws
  • Baking Dish
  • Glass Canning JarsMakeover Your Jars for the SummerMakeover Your Jars for the Summer

Simple Steps!

  1. Start by painting a canning jar with two coats of your pastel acrylic paint, allowing the paint to dry completely between each coat.
  2. Once dry, apply a thin coat of glue to the bottom third of the jar and use your index finger to smooth the glue so it has a thin, even layer across the jar.
  3. Then, pour nonpareil sprinkles or beads over the glue and set aside to dry. Place a baking dish underneath as you pour the sprinkles or beads to catch the excess and then throw out the excess in case any accidentally had glue on them.
  4. For your finishing touches, choose from a variety of stickers from Dollar Tree (I chose a novelty ice cream cone sticker) to apply to the front of your jar and fill it with fun paper straws.

Now who wants an ice cream float?

3. Watermelon Utensil HolderMakeover Your Jars for the Summer

Our family loves to BBQ in the summer and neighbors or friends are often stopping by to join us in the backyard. I always turn to Dollar Tree to make sure I’m stocked up with plenty of disposable plates and utensils as the last thing I want to do after having people over is wash dishes! This summer I’m going to always be ready for company by keeping these watermelon utensil holders stocked with plastic utensils all season long.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • Acrylic Paint in Bright Pink or Red, Green and White
  • Paint Brushes
  • Plastic Utensils in Bright Green
  • Glass Canning JarsMakeover Your Jars for the Summer

Water You Waiting For?!

  1. Start by painting two canning jars with two coats each of bright pink or red acrylic paint and allow the paint to dry completely between each coat.
  2. Then mix green and white acrylic paint to make a nice light green color.
  3. Paint the bottom third of each jar with the light green acrylic paint.
  4. Once dry, leave about 1/2 inch of the light green paint and cover the rest with the original green paint, to make the watermelon rind.
  5. Once dry, use a fine tip paint brush and the remaining light green paint to add some fun squiggly line details.
  6. To finish, I add bright green plastic forks and knives to each jar and you’re ready for your next BBQ!
